Why the valley is foggy and the peak is sunny

  1. On clear, calm nights, cold air drains into the basins and valleys and stays there.
  2. A layer of warmer air stays above it: the temperature rises with height instead of falling. This is called a temperature inversion.
  3. Moisture in the cold air condenses into fog or low cloud with a sharp top. Above that top you are in the sun, often in warmer air than in the valley.

Inversions are most common from October to February, especially in the Ljubljana, Celje and Maribor basins.

The cross-section is schematic: peaks and basins run from the Julian Alps to Pohorje, distances are not to scale, heights are real. The height axis is a square-root scale, so the lower peaks around the fog line stay easy to tell apart. We estimate the top of the fog from the hourly forecast at 10:00 for 98 peaks: it lies between the highest peaks in cloud and the lowest in the sun. We only show it when the peaks really split by height. Forecast updated
